Answer a real customer's question
Google's guidance emphasizes helpful, reliable content made for people. For a small business, begin with the questions that determine whether someone can buy or book: what you offer, where you work, what it costs and how the next step happens.
A café page should help someone understand the menu, location and ordering options. A consultant's page should explain the service and who it suits. Repeating a target phrase across many near-identical pages does not make those decisions easier.
Make the page understandable
Google's SEO starter guide covers descriptive titles, useful links and helping search engines discover content. Give each important page a specific subject and a clear heading. Link to it from another relevant part of the site instead of leaving it isolated.
Use actual business details and describe images when their meaning matters. Check the page without being signed in. If a service requires a customer account, keep private customer information private while making the public explanation of that service easy to find.
Check what is really live
Open the published address, follow the main navigation and try important links. Confirm that a page has one intended address and that old addresses behave sensibly after changes. A sitemap is an inventory for discovery; seeing a URL there does not establish that Google has indexed or ranked it.
Use Search Console for the property you control to inspect indexing and search performance. Keep the date range and filters consistent when comparing periods. A result you see while logged in can be personalized, so do not treat one manual search as a complete ranking report.
Improve from evidence
Record which pages receive impressions, which attract clicks and what visitors do next. A page with relevant impressions but few clicks may need a clearer title or better alignment with the question. A page with visits but no useful action may need a better explanation or a simpler journey.
Make one clear improvement, note the date and review a comparable period after enough data has arrived. Separate technical completion from search outcomes. Good content and accessible pages create the conditions for discovery; no article count or AI prompt can promise a particular ranking.
