Gift with purchase: explain the extra step in the cart
Check eligibility, gift availability and customer instructions before promoting a free item.

Do not hide the required action
Shopify's buy X get Y documentation says customers must add the qualifying items and the reward item to their cart; the gift is not inserted automatically. That detail matters more than the promotion's banner design. In a hypothetical skincare shop, a buyer may purchase an eligible cleanser and expect a sample bag to appear by itself. If the configured offer requires them to select it, say so beside the offer and make the next action easy to find. Test the advertised instruction against the actual cart experience.
Specify eligibility before writing the headline
List which products qualify, whether the threshold is a quantity or an amount, and how many reward items an order can receive. Decide whether the customer can choose between gifts. Keep internal calculations separate from a clear public explanation, but do not omit conditions that change the result. For the skincare example, a small collection of eligible products may be easier to explain than several exclusions buried in terms. Staff should be able to answer why a particular basket qualifies without manually guessing from the headline. Ask the packing lead to identify the reward from the receipt alone, including the case where an eligible customer declined the gift.
Protect the gift supply
Count the gift stock and decide what happens when it is exhausted. If the reward is unavailable, an otherwise qualifying purchase may no longer match the customer's expectation. Prepare a way to stop or revise the promotion promptly. Do not silently replace the promised item without a clear customer-facing rule. Include the gift in the packing process so it is checked like other order contents. A zero price does not make it operationally invisible: someone still has to reserve, pick and hand it to the customer.
Try the baskets people will actually make
Rehearse a basket just below the threshold, one exactly at it, a basket missing the gift and one containing two gifts. Add any other live discount and observe the result under the chosen settings. Check the confirmation message as well as checkout. Ask a colleague unfamiliar with the setup to complete the offer using only the public instructions. If they need guidance, improve the wording before launch. Measure the promotion using your own completed orders later, without assuming that a free gift necessarily improves profit or repeat buying.
