Product specifications belong in fields people can maintain
Use structured details for dimensions, materials and compatibility without burying them in sales copy.

Decide which facts need consistency
Shopify metafields can store specialised information and connect it to a theme for display. For a hypothetical lighting shop, this suggests a place for dimensions, materials and other repeatable product details. First decide what each field means. A height measurement without a unit or a note about whether the shade is included can mislead even when the number is correct. Keep the description free to explain the design, while the specification fields provide facts that staff can check and maintain in a consistent way.
Create a small specification contract
For each field, record its label, unit, allowed values and responsible editor. Decide how unknown information appears. An empty field should not become zero, and an unverified compatibility statement should not be presented as confirmed. Start with the details customers need to decide whether the item fits their intended use. Avoid collecting dozens of attributes because the software permits them. Every additional field creates maintenance work, and a neglected specification can undermine the credibility of otherwise carefully written product information across the catalog.
Check the display separately from storage
Enter sample values that are short, long and missing, then inspect the actual product page. Confirm the chosen theme displays the information where customers expect it and preserves readable units. Test a product that genuinely lacks an optional attribute. If the page leaves an empty heading or awkward punctuation, adjust the display. Do not assume that adding a field in the admin changes the storefront automatically. The owner needs a clear path from editing the value to seeing the updated fact on the published product page. Give each supplier-provided specification a review owner, especially when similar product names make it easy to copy a value onto the wrong item.
Make corrections traceable
Suppose the lighting supplier corrects a dimension after several orders. Decide who updates the record and who checks whether any customers need a direct explanation. Keep enough internal evidence to establish where the earlier value came from. Then review nearby products that may share the same source data. Structured fields make maintenance easier only when someone owns their accuracy. The practical finish line is that a colleague can update a specification without rewriting the page and can verify that the customer now sees the intended, supported information.
