A French microbusiness should not borrow the wrong AI benchmark

Check company-size coverage before treating an enterprise adoption statistic as a local competitive target.

The smallest firms are outside this denominator

Insee's 2024 enterprise ICT figures cover businesses with at least ten employees in specified market sectors. They therefore do not directly describe a two-person design studio or a sole trader. Treating the published rate as the share of all French businesses would broaden the finding beyond its measured population.

This matters when a vendor uses a national statistic to create urgency. A microbusiness has a different division of labor, a smaller budget and often a direct relationship between the owner and customers. Its software decision should begin with those conditions, even when the market around it is changing.

Find the owner-time constraint

List the tasks that prevent the owner from doing paid or important work. Separate repeated preparation from judgment that depends on the customer's situation. An assistant may be useful for arranging notes or drafting a standard explanation while leaving the commercial choice with the owner.

Estimate the frequency of the task before testing a feature. Saving a modest amount of time on daily work may matter more than a spectacular demonstration for a job that occurs twice a year. Also include the time needed to maintain instructions and review output.

Keep the first workflow small

Choose a single input and a single useful result. A designer could test whether meeting notes become an accurate project brief with unanswered questions visible. Avoid expanding the trial immediately into proposal writing, billing, scheduling and customer management merely because the product advertises all of them.

Try the brief with a client request that changes midway. The software should help the owner see what changed rather than generate a new polished document that obscures the difference. For a small firm, clarity can be more valuable than producing a larger volume of text.

Use a local decision rule

At the end of the trial, ask whether the process saved usable time, reduced omissions or improved responsiveness enough to justify its continuing cost. Record limitations and keep the ability to complete the task manually when the tool is unavailable.

A microbusiness can rationally adopt a narrow feature, delay a purchase or decide that its current process is sufficient. Insee's survey helps describe part of the wider economy. Your own task volume, review burden and customer expectations provide the evidence for the decision that affects your business.

Put it into practice.
