Freelancers should inspect which part of their offer clients can now do themselves

Use early labor-market evidence to test a service adjustment without assuming the whole profession has disappeared.

A market signal is not an individual forecast

Hui and Reshef report short-run declines in contracts and earnings among more AI-exposed freelancers in their platform study. The setting and period do not determine every freelancer's prospects or current demand. The evidence is a reason to examine the offer a client buys, rather than assume that previous work will retain the same value unchanged.

A client may now prepare an initial draft but still need help defining the problem, checking facts, adapting the result or putting it into use. Whether those needs support a viable service must be tested with actual customers, not inferred from a general claim about human creativity.

Break the offer into components

List the work inside a recent engagement: discovery, research, production, review, revisions and handover. Identify which components clients can perform satisfactorily themselves and which remain difficult. Ask clients directly rather than treating their access to an AI tool as proof of competence or willingness to do every task.

Keep the discussion concrete. A client may value help resolving inconsistent source material more than another set of generated variations.

Propose a narrower paid outcome

Test an offer such as turning a rough draft into an approved, fact-checked page or converting scattered requirements into a usable project brief. Define the acceptance conditions and the information the client must provide. Avoid a vague promise to add a human touch that neither party can assess.

Retain work samples showing the before-and-after decision, with appropriate permission. Do not invent client outcomes or use generated testimonials to make the new offer appear established.

Measure demand and delivery effort

Record qualified inquiries, accepted projects, revision load and time required to complete the new package. Compare its economics with the old service. A higher price per project can still be unattractive if the scope is unclear and every engagement expands beyond the original agreement.

Treat early results as exploratory when the number of customers is small.

Keep adjusting from evidence

Use customer objections to refine the offer and preserve options across related services. Do not abandon a working specialty solely because a platform study reports an aggregate decline. Conversely, do not dismiss changed buying behavior because a few existing clients remain loyal.

This repositioning framework is our business analysis. The research supplies a bounded market signal; the freelancer's own customers and delivery economics determine which combination of judgment, production and accountability remains worth paying for.

Put it into practice.
