Korean SMEs need a workflow benchmark, not a conglomerate benchmark

Compare similar work and customer expectations before importing an enterprise AI spending plan.

A national gap is not your project target

The OECD's Korea 2024 survey describes a substantial productivity gap between smaller and larger firms. That structural comparison is not a measured effect of AI. It does not show that a small company can close the gap by buying the same software as a large manufacturer or technology group.

A conglomerate's demonstration may depend on dedicated data teams, standardized processes and a large volume of repeat work. A small supplier has different constraints. The useful question is which part of your process creates delay or rework, and which investment can realistically improve it.

Compare like-for-like operating work

Choose a benchmark close to your own service promise. A custom component workshop should examine quoting accuracy, scheduling reliability or preparation time for a repeat order. A large company's overall revenue per employee combines too many other differences to be a clean target for that decision.

Use your own previous performance as an additional comparison. Record the mix of easy and difficult jobs, because a month with simpler orders can look more productive without any underlying process change. When comparing vendors, give each the same mixture and the same acceptance conditions.

Identify the complementary work

An AI feature may require consistent item names, usable drawings or a current list of production constraints. Estimate the effort to supply those inputs. If they are missing, the first project may be organizing the records rather than purchasing a more sophisticated forecasting or drafting tool.

Make that preliminary work visible in the budget. It has value if it helps employees operate consistently even before AI is added. It is less useful if staff maintain it only for a pilot that nobody expects to continue after the demonstration.

Set a narrow economic ambition

Choose a result such as fewer quote corrections or a shorter delay before production can begin. Put a ceiling on setup effort and a review date on the trial. Keep customer quality and delivery reliability in the decision alongside speed.

This approach will not produce a claim about closing Korea's national productivity gap, and it does not need to. It can produce a defensible investment decision for one business. The broader survey explains why productivity matters; the local workflow explains what to improve next and how to recognize whether it improved.

Put it into practice.
