Shopify or a custom business app? Follow the workflow.

Use your catalog, checkout and daily operations to decide whether you need a store, a custom app or both.

Start at the transaction

Shopify's online store brings a storefront and commerce tools together. If your core journey is browsing products, adding items to a cart and completing an order, it deserves a place on your shortlist. Start by testing that whole journey with your actual product structure, rather than comparing home-page designs.

Write down variants, stock rules, delivery options, returns and the person who handles each exception. A shop with ten simple products and a made-to-order furniture business may both need checkout, but their work after payment can look very different.

Find the part that is specific to your business

A custom business app becomes interesting when the main job is a workflow: approving a quote, collecting documents, assigning a job or tracking a service. Map the states in plain words. For example, a repair request might move from received to inspected, quoted, approved and completed.

Ask which system should hold each record. If the store already owns your orders, creating a second independent order list may create reconciliation work. A new app should have a clear responsibility and a reliable connection to the existing process.

Consider a combination before a replacement

Shopify also supports custom storefronts connected to its commerce backend. That means the choice is broader than a standard theme or an entirely separate system. This approach introduces implementation and maintenance work, so evaluate it against a simpler store first.

For a service business, an existing store might remain responsible for product sales while a separate app manages consultations. Treat that as a design option to investigate, not a promise that every builder connects these systems automatically. Verify the exact integration and the person responsible when it fails.

Run one realistic trial

Use the same example in each candidate: a customer orders a configurable product, receives the right confirmation and asks to change something. Have the owner process that change. Record the manual steps, missing features and total costs, including any additional apps or services.

Choose the option that handles the important work with the least ongoing confusion. Zocri can be explored for a tailored app or website, but a comparison should use an actual result and verified connections. A new interface is valuable when it improves the job, not merely because it is new.

Put it into practice.
