Pre-selling a digital collection without confusing delivery
Keep the release date, payment timing and access instructions aligned for an unfinished digital product.

State that the product is still coming
WooCommerce Pre-Orders documents release-date controls and options for charging upfront or upon release. For a hypothetical illustrator selling a forthcoming asset collection, the essential customer message is that the files are not available yet. Show the expected release and what the buyer will receive. Check the chosen payment gateway and delivery setup before describing when money moves or access begins. A beautiful preview can explain the collection, but it should not make an unfinished product look like an immediate download purchase.
Define the release package
List the file types, included items and intended use in terms that can be checked at delivery. Distinguish previews from final files and explain whether updates are included. Do not promise formats or licences that have not been decided. Keep a copy of the offer attached to the release so later edits do not obscure what early buyers were told. In the illustration example, a smaller, clearly specified collection can be easier to complete and support than a broad promise of every asset a buyer might eventually need.
Prepare delivery and support together
Rehearse how a buyer receives access, finds the files again and asks for help if an email is missing. Test the file names, archive contents and opening instructions on the environments the product claims to support. A successful payment should lead to an accurate status, not an empty download page labelled complete. Decide who handles requests while the release is still pending. If the date changes, communicate directly to existing buyers and explain their options under the published terms rather than only editing the public countdown.
Make launch day a controlled transition
Use a sample order to move from preorder to released, then verify the buyer can obtain the intended final version. Check what happens to a payment that requires further action and an order that was cancelled before release. Keep those cases visible to support. Ask an uninvolved colleague to follow the delivery instructions from beginning to end. The collection is ready when payment state, product availability and customer messaging agree. A release-date setting is useful coordination, but it cannot prove that the files themselves are complete or usable. Keep the released archive separate from working files, with a clear version name that support can use when a buyer reports a problem.
