Preorders for a pottery batch: publish a promise you can update

Define the release window, production cap and delay response before taking advance orders.

Distinguish interest from a paid promise

Shopify offers pre-orders through pre-order apps. Before installing one, decide whether your offer collects interest, reserves an item or takes payment for future fulfilment. Imagine a hypothetical potter preparing a new glaze collection. A mailing list can help estimate interest without promising every person a piece. A paid preorder creates a different expectation. Describe the item, expected fulfilment window and what the buyer can do if the schedule changes. Verify the chosen app's payment timing and eligibility instead of assuming every preorder charges in the same way.

Cap against deliverable pieces

The potter should choose a sales cap that reflects work they can reasonably deliver, including room to replace damaged or unsuitable pieces. This guide does not assume a particular kiln success rate. Use the workshop's own records or begin with a deliberately small allocation. Separate the public order cap from the number of pieces planned for production. If a batch exceeds expectations, the extra stock can be sold later. Selling every hopeful unit in advance leaves less room to resolve ordinary production problems without disappointing a customer. Keep the preorder allocation separate from finished-stock photography, so the team can explain whether a displayed piece is an example or the reserved item.

Write the delay message early

Prepare an update that names the affected collection, the revised expectation and the available customer choices. Decide who sends it and where the response is recorded. If the business has not settled the replacement date, say what is known and when the next update will arrive. Avoid repeatedly moving a date on the product page while existing customers remain unaware. Keep a copy of the promise shown at purchase so support can answer questions using the terms that applied to that order.

Test release day

Run a sample preorder through payment, an expected-date change and final fulfilment. Verify the exact app's treatment of mixed baskets containing ready stock and preorder items. Then ask the packing team to identify which customers are due which pieces without using a separate personal list. Test one cancellation and confirm the inventory effect. Launch the batch when the business can explain both the happy path and a delay. A well-managed limited release depends on a visible queue of commitments as much as on photographs of the finished work.

Put it into practice.
