Gift card support: keep the buyer and recipient distinct
Plan delivery mistakes, gift messages and customer assistance without exposing the card unnecessarily.

A gift has two customer relationships
Shopify supports selling gift card products and creating gift cards in the admin. For a hypothetical boutique, that raises a support question before the first promotion: the purchaser and the person using the gift may be different people. Decide which contact receives purchase confirmation, which receives the gift and what each can ask staff to change. The product feature establishes a way to issue value, but the business still needs a clear support process. Do not assume every request from the recipient authorises changes to the buyer's purchase.
Test delivery mistakes without revealing the gift
A buyer may enter an incorrect email address or want to send the gift later. Verify the actual delivery controls and document what staff can do. Avoid copying the full card details into broad internal conversations or public order notes. Give support an appropriate reference for locating the purchase and a controlled method for confirming who is requesting help. If the gift message is private, treat it accordingly. The aim is to solve a delivery problem while preserving the intended surprise and preventing unnecessary exposure of spendable value. Keep an internal record of the approved assistance action without reproducing the complete gift details, reducing unnecessary exposure while preserving a useful support history.
Explain the recipient journey
The recipient should understand where the gift can be used, how to apply it and how to ask about a remaining balance or problem. Check the current platform behaviour for the channels the boutique actually offers. Do not assume an online gift automatically works with every external booking or retail system. Keep the business's terms and any applicable requirements accurate for its circumstances. Use a sample gift to review the instructions as someone who has never shopped at the boutique, because the recipient may have no prior knowledge of the brand.
Give staff a short decision path
Rehearse an undelivered gift, a recipient who cannot use it and a buyer asking to change the message. Record the evidence needed and the approved action for each, using the actual system's capabilities. Keep exceptional decisions traceable and avoid promising replacements before the original status is understood. The gift offer is ready when support can identify the purchase, protect the value and explain the recipient's next step. A polished gift email helps the presentation, but reliable assistance is part of the experience people are buying for someone else.
