Gift card or prepaid session package? Sell the right promise
Choose between stored spending value and a defined service entitlement before creating a gift offer.

Identify what the recipient receives
Shopify lets a merchant sell gift card products and create gift cards in the admin. A gift card is a useful starting point when the offer is spending value. Consider a hypothetical portrait studio deciding between a gift worth a stated amount and a package containing one shoot plus three edited images. The first leaves more choice to the recipient; the second promises defined work. Describe the entitlement before selecting software. A product labelled as a gift should not leave the recipient guessing whether they still need to pay.
Price changes expose the difference
Walk through the offer after the studio raises its usual session price. With a monetary gift, the recipient may need to cover a difference. With a defined session entitlement, the business must decide how its published offer handles the change. This is not something the checkout label should decide accidentally. Write a plain explanation of what is included, how the recipient books and which optional purchases cost extra. Have the team review the terms appropriate to the business before the offer goes on sale. Check the gift page with a recipient who did not see the advertisement, since they may interpret the entitlement differently from the purchaser.
Plan partial use and transfers
A recipient may want a smaller purchase, a different service or permission to pass the gift to somebody else. List these cases and decide which are supported. If the offer is a package, track the remaining service entitlement separately from the appointment time. Reserving a date should not erase the record of what is still owed, and rescheduling should not create a second entitlement. Ask any proposed booking or package app to demonstrate these situations with sample records instead of relying on a list of integration logos.
Make support able to explain it
Give a colleague a hypothetical gift purchase and ask them to answer three questions: what can the recipient use, how much remains and what happens if the appointment changes? They should find those answers in the records and customer terms. Also test the buyer's message, the recipient's instructions and the confirmation after redemption. If these disagree, correct the wording or workflow before promoting the offer. Choose a gift card for flexible value and a package for clearly bounded work only after both paths have been demonstrated.
