Instalment plan or subscription? Name the obligation correctly

Distinguish paying down a fixed purchase from buying an ongoing service.

Start with whether the total is fixed

WooCommerce Deposits supports dividing a purchase into scheduled payments, and its documentation says those payments are invoiced rather than automatically charged. For a hypothetical custom table, the customer may be paying a known total in stages. That is different from buying a continuing monthly service with no predetermined end. Name the arrangement accurately before choosing software. State the full price, payment schedule and what remains due. Obtain appropriate advice for obligations that depend on the commercial arrangement; a payment-plan feature does not settle those questions by itself.

Tie progress to clear records

For the table purchase, the workshop needs to know how much has been paid and which production stage has been approved. These may be related, but they should remain distinct. A completed payment does not prove that a finish sample was accepted, and a finished table does not prove the balance has been collected. Define the conditions for starting work, requesting the next payment and arranging delivery. Keep the customer informed about each condition so the schedule does not become a series of unexpected demands.

Plan a changed scope or cancelled order

If the customer requests an additional drawer, determine the revised total and how it affects future payments before updating the schedule. Preserve the original agreement and approved change. If the order is cancelled, record the operational resolution and payment adjustment separately under the business's terms and applicable obligations. Do not leave later scheduled requests active merely because the workshop removed the production job. The owner needs one current view of the remaining obligation and a history that explains how the amount changed over time.

Test the final payment

Use a sample plan to check each invoice, a missed payment, a scope change and the point at which the full balance is settled. Confirm that the customer receives a clear completion message and no further collection request follows. Compare that journey with a recurring service in which future periods continue until cancellation. Choose the structure that reflects what is being sold, not whichever feature has a convenient monthly setting. A fixed purchase should end with a settled obligation, while an ongoing service needs a separate rule for renewal and access. Give the final settled purchase a clear reference in the production record, preventing an old scheduled invoice from being mistaken for an outstanding obligation.

Put it into practice.
