Multilingual capability contains several different tasks
IndicGenBench evaluates generation across 29 Indic languages, including translation, summarization and question answering. The 2024 benchmark is a research resource, not a current certification for a merchant's support software. Its task distinctions are useful because a product can handle one language operation more successfully than another.
A service business may need to understand a mixed-language inquiry, preserve a delivery address and explain a booking condition. Those are separate requirements. A demonstration that translates a polished paragraph does not establish that the same system will correctly process an abbreviated customer message containing a change of date.
Choose languages from actual demand
Review the languages and writing styles your customers use, with appropriate handling of personal information. Include mixed scripts, local product names and common shorthand. Do not assume that support for a language in a product menu means your particular vocabulary or customer habits have been tested.
Create a small set of realistic requests in each important language. Have a competent speaker specify the required meaning and next action before seeing the generated answer. This reduces the temptation to accept a response merely because it sounds smooth to someone who cannot judge its content.
Test preservation as well as fluency
Check names, dates, quantities, negation and uncertainty. A reply that changes an unavailable date into an available one has failed even if its grammar is elegant. Ask the reviewer to identify whether the customer would know what to do next and which details still need clarification.
Include an example the assistant should escalate rather than answer. Staff need a clear handover when a message is ambiguous or outside the supported service. Measure whether the original request and the uncertainty survive that handover so the customer does not have to repeat the entire conversation.
Release language support in stages
Start with the languages and tasks that pass the business's checks. Keep review for weaker combinations and collect examples of misunderstandings. Recheck important journeys when the software or reference information changes, since the original result does not guarantee future behavior.
The practical outcome may be excellent assistance for drafting in one language and only cautious summarization in another. That is more useful than a blanket multilingual promise. Our recommendation is to buy verified customer completion, using the benchmark's task distinction as a starting point rather than treating a published score as your own service guarantee.
