Writing faster changes where the work happens
A writing experiment is a reason to measure preparation and editing, not just the first draft.

The first draft is only one stage
The March 2023 Noy and Zhang working paper finds faster, higher-rated output on its professional writing tasks. This version is explicitly a working paper and studies a bounded task setting. It does not measure the full process of researching, approving and publishing customer-facing material in a business.
For an owner, the relevant hypothesis is that writing effort may move between stages. An assistant can produce a draft quickly, while the business still needs to supply accurate details and check the result. Measuring only the generation step can miss a larger editing or verification burden.
Time the entire assignment
Choose a recurring document, such as a service explanation or project update. Track the time spent collecting information, preparing instructions, reviewing the draft, correcting it and securing approval. Use the same definition of finished for both assisted and existing methods.
Keep the expected reader and purpose consistent. A short internal note and a public service page require different levels of polish and checking. Comparing an AI-generated rough draft with a previously approved final document will favor speed at the expense of an honest assessment of equivalent work.
Look for the new bottleneck
If drafting becomes easy, the limiting step may become fact gathering or approval. Ask whether the next investment should be a better source reference, clearer ownership or more reviewer capacity. Buying another drafting tool may do little for a process already waiting on someone to confirm the details.
Review corrections by type. Repeated factual errors, vague claims and unnecessary length call for different responses. A narrower brief can reduce some problems, while others require a person with knowledge the assistant does not possess. Keep that distinction visible in the trial notes.
Define the quality threshold in advance
Specify what a finished piece must do: answer the customer's question, preserve the service conditions and avoid unsupported promises. Have a reviewer evaluate both methods against those requirements without treating fluency as sufficient evidence of accuracy.
Adopt the tool where the full assignment becomes easier at an acceptable quality level. Keep a different process for work where checking remains too costly. This evaluation framework is our interpretation for small businesses. The experiment supports testing writing assistance; it does not justify projecting a laboratory task result directly onto your entire content budget.
